St Kyneburgh

Nobody seems to know her name,
But long ago to here she came.
They say she was a princess royal,
For whom a Baker began to toil.
Her parents said marry she must,
The princess thought this was unjust.
She packed her bags and ran away,
And came to Gloucestershire to stay.
She looked for somewhere she could stop,
And came upon a Bakers’ shop,
The kindly girl they gave a home,
And soon they made the girl their own.
But the Bakers’ wife so jealous got,
And very soon hatched up a plot,

Whilst the Baker was away, the girl, the Bakers’ wife did slay.
Returning home the Baker found, of their young girl, no sight or sound.
He called her name to his surprise, His daughters voice from well did rise.
Her body in the well was found, and buried in some holy ground.
The water from this well they feel, had the ability to heal.
So St Kyneburgh the girl became, on doing so she found her fame.
This monument stands here because, a miracle this surely was.

Anglo Saxon Kyne (child) burgh (royal) became Kimbrose hence Kimbrose way where this monument stands.
