I K Brunel was this
gentleman’s name,
Civil Engineering’s
what brought him his fame.
Though with worldwide
renown, he was really quite small,
So a large chain he
wore and hat very tall.
The people all scoffed,
but Brunel, he knew,
That the things that he
dreamed of, would soon all come true.
The Great Western
Railway, his pride and his joy,
He dreamt of its
building whilst only a boy.
From Bristol to London
in less than four hours,
Pulled by an engine,
with steam driven power.
The great Box Tunnel
almost two miles in length,
Dug out by navvies with
incredible strength.
“You’ll Never Do It”
the people all cried,
It cost him so dearly,
One Hundred men died.
On hearing what
happened, to their rescue he flew,
SS Great Britain, first
propelled iron ship,
“It just won’t work”
the cynics all quip.
Clifton Bridge spans
the Severn so wide,
Suspended from towers
on rocks either side.
The first ever bridge
constructed this way.
The Bridge is still
standing, and there it will stay,
